Ben Potter

Ben Potter grew up in Tennessee and lives in Belfast Maine. He majored in Art and Biology at Williams College and received his MFA from the California College of the Arts.

He writes that he is “interested in the oscillation between representation and abstraction. These pieces are derived from patterns found in the landscape and examine how we experience and make sense of our surroundings. I work with the connotations of materials and the nuance they lend to the work.

Ben Potter's paintings explore the interstices between different materials and forms. He often works with found photographs and stencils, transforming them into unexpected shapes and configurations of positive and negative space. Potter's paintings exist in a liminal space between the everyday and the extraordinary, abstraction and representation, inviting us to to see them in a new light.
