A Sketchbook Is A Place

Washburn writes, “My sketchbooks are the way I stay connected to that fresh, open, passionate place of listening that I aspire to as an artist. My talk will share a few of my insights about that journey, and show you examples of my sketchbooks and how they inform my paintings and drawings, and the materials I use in my sketchbook practice.”

Lari Washburn received a BFA in painting from Lake Erie College, but she “put it on a shelf for many years because I had not learned in art school anything about where art came from within myself.” While working in a telecommunications corporation, Washburn founded a creativity center for software developers and engineers to help them “think outside the box”. She loved that work, but found that she was the person who needed to see things differently. She writes, “One offering we had for our clients was an intuitive painting workshop to teach them about creative risk-taking. I started to pursue these workshops more deeply for myself, and that connected to me to what is my current art-making practice today.”

The gallery is pleased to present a Virtual artist talk with Lari Washburn, in conversation with Cynthia Winings, which will highlight Washburn’s intuitive approach to art-making and materials in the context of her sketchbook practice. Thursday, April 29 at 7PM. Please RSVP to receive the Zoom Link.
