Blue Hill Maine - The Cynthia Winings Gallery is pleased to present the group exhibition, Beacons, featuring the works of David Hornung, Lari Washburn, and Robin Reynolds. This thought-provoking show, set to open on July 2, 5 - 7PM , unites three artists whose distinctive styles and shared themes converge to create a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.
Beacons serves as a beacon itself, guiding visitors through a dynamic exploration of color, form, symbolism, and introspection. David Hornung, known for his vibrant abstractions and color exploration, pushes the boundaries of painting and collage, infusing his works with energy and radiance. Lari Washburn's enigmatic non-objective paintings combine organic and found elements, inspiring viewers to contemplate the mysteries of existence and our interconnectedness. Meanwhile, Robin Reynolds's flowerful landscapes, with their energetic brushstrokes and harmonious compositions, act as beacons of nature, inviting introspection into the beauty of our humble gardens and our emotional landscapes.
Through the shared themes of illumination, exploration, and introspection, "Beacons" beckons art enthusiasts and curious minds alike to embark on a visual and emotional journey. This exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in the transformative power of art and discover their own creative potentials. Join us as we witness the convergence of these three visionary artists, whose works shine brightly as beacons, illuminating the boundless possibilities of artistic expression.

Interstice
The Cynthia Winings Gallery presents,
Interstice
Featuring Edwige Charlot Elizabeth Gourlay Ben Potter
With New Work from Ingrid Ellison, Nina Jerome, Lari Washburn, Patricia Wheeler, Cynthia Winings, Diane Bowie Zaitlin and more..
The upcoming exhibition Interstice brings together three artists who explore the concept of in-betweenness and liminal spaces in their art. Edwige Charlot, Ben Potter, and Elizabeth Gourlay each offer unique perspectives on the theme, while also sharing a common interest in exploring the space between different ideas and concepts.
Edwige Charlot's work often deals with the intersection of different cultures and identities, creating a sense of interstitial space that invites exploration and reflection. Her mixed-media collages combine elements of African, Caribbean, and European art and culture, creating a unique fusion that blurs the boundaries between different traditions. The interstices between these different elements become the focus of her work, revealing the complex and fluid nature of identity and culture.
Ben Potter's paintings similarly explore the interstices between different materials and forms. He often works with found photographs and stencils, transforming them into unexpected shapes and configurations of positive and negative space. Potter's paintings exist in a liminal space between the everyday and the extraordinary, abstraction and representation, inviting us to to see them in a new light.
Finally, Elizabeth Gourlay's abstract paintings explore the interstices between color, form, and space. Her paintings are marked by a deliberate and intentional use of color, often arranged in a seemingly mathematical or geometric pattern. Her color choices are not haphazard, but rather carefully calculated to create a sense of balance, harmony, and tension within the composition. This interstitial space between movement and stillness, between color and form, invites us to reflect on the nature of perception and experience.
Taken together, the artworks of Charlot, Potter, and Gourlay offer a rich exploration of the idea of interstice. Whether through the fusion of different cultures and identities, the space between different materials, or the interplay of color and form in abstract painting, these artists reveal the complex and dynamic nature of the space in between. Through their work, we are invited to explore and interpret this liminal space, consider the connections and relationships between different ideas and concepts, and embrace the ambiguity and complexity of the spaces in between.

The community is invited to Heather Lyon’s ‘Portal Jump’ a collective performance art event, where attendees are welcome to cross through a standing 10 foot tall wreath of natural materials, completed by Lyon in December 2021. Over the last 10 months Lyon has observed animals and birds, wind, rain and snow, moon and sun, all interacting with the sculpture. She has witnessed changes that have occurred in her life and others who have passed through the portal. Lyon's artworks engage the participant in acts of transformation and ritual, and in this performance, everyone is invited to pass through the threshold with intention to discover, ‘what lies on the other side’.

Artist Talk: A Sketchbook Is A Place
The Cynthia Winings Gallery presents:
A Virtual Artist Talk by Lari Washburn: A Sketchbook Is A Place
Thursday, April 29, 7PM
Lari Washburn received a BFA in painting from Lake Erie College, but she “put it on a shelf for many years because I had not learned in art school anything about where art came from within myself.” While working in a telecommunications corporation, Washburn founded a creativity center for software developers and engineers to help them “think outside the box”. She loved that work, but found that she was the person who needed to see things differently. She writes, “One offering we had for our clients was an intuitive painting workshop to teach them about creative risk-taking. I started to pursue these workshops more deeply for myself, and that connected to me to what is my current art-making practice today.”
The gallery is pleased to present a Virtual artist talk with Lari Washburn, in conversation with Cynthia Winings, which will highlight Washburn’s intuitive approach to art-making and materials in the context of her sketchbook practice. Thursday, April 29 at 7PM. Please RSVP to receive the Zoom Link.

In Search of Light: From Penobscot Bay to Cape Ann,
A Virtual Artist Talk by Carol Pelletier
Thursday, December 17, 7PM
For the last ten years, Carol Pelletier has been researching the connection between memory and ethereal space found in dramatic and reflected light along the coasts of Penobscot Bay, Maine, and Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Pelletier will touch upon how time and place can magically be held within memory. She will walk us through the coastal landscape revealing some of the natural phenomena that continuously inspires her studio practice. Join us as she shares her painting process, using cold wax medium to capture veils of transparent color and light. I hope to see you there! Please RSVP to receive the Zoom Link, Thank you!
Acadian Seas, Acadian Seeing
Cynthia Winings Gallery is pleased to present: .
A Virtual Gallery Talk, Acadian Seas, Acadian Seeing
Christine Lafuente shares how a decade of painting seascapes on Mount Desert Island has inspired an evolution in her still life compositions.
In her paintings of harbors, rocky coasts, and the islands of Acadia, light plays through varying atmospheres of fogs, mists, and clear sunny days. Lafuente writes, “Looking into water changes how I see nature. It becomes abstracted and mysterious, as in the way form falls apart and coalesces again in a reflection on the water. As I begin to express this transformation in paint, I also seek to recreate this visual experience in my still life compositions. Inside a glass water-filled vase is a microcosm of how the world reveals itself in paint.”
SEMAPHORE LOVE LETTER
“I am calling to you, my beloved, across these sublime spaces. I am declaring my love to you, and to the mountains, and to the sea, to the unknowable in myself, in you, and all that is.”
The Cynthia Winings Gallery presents Heather Lyon’s Premier of a collective performance of ‘Semaphore Love Letter’, an action in the environment using a language of flags to send a message of Love and Healing to the ocean. The date of the event is Saturday, August 22, 5:30 PM, at Curtis Cove, East Blue Hill, Maine.
Heather Lyon writes, "SEMAPHORE LOVE LETTER" is an ongoing series of movement and flag based video and public performances in Maine, France, Portugal, Italy, and the Republic of Georgia; a declaration of love and lament to water in all forms. Semaphore is a system of communication using flags held in specific positions to represent letters that then create phrases. This project begins from the understanding that water supports all life, and seeks to draw attention to and build relationship with water as an entity.
“As a way to investigate collective intention and action I am inviting a group of interested people to participate in this project. We will learn and then perform together a semaphore phrase at the edge of the ocean. I see the ocean / water as the potential recipient of the message, but our intentions will vary, directed towards a specific person, persons, non-human entity or situation, requesting water to be the carrier of the message. We will wear mylar “safety ponchos” often used in situations of disaster, pointing to the urgency of this critical moment. Though useful against cold and heat, it does nothing to protect us from emotional catastrophe.
“This project holds increased relevance in this time of global trauma and can be experienced as an acknowledgement of our collective loss and physical separation. I am interested in semaphore as a code, a form of movement based nonverbal communication. I use it to express sentiments of longing and tenderness.”
If you’d like to participate in this historic event, Registration is required and limited to 10 participants. Please contact the gallery if you would like more information and to sign up. Heather Lyon will be making the Semaphore Flags for each participant. Afterwards, the flags will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds donated to a local organization working towards the protection and preservation of our water.
Volunteers who would like to learn the language of Semaphore and perform will arrive on Saturday, August 22 at 4:00pm at Curtis Cove, East Blue Hill, Maine. The performance for the community will be held at 5:30PM, and will last approximately 15 minutes. Everyone is welcome, donations toward the project are gratefully accepted.
THE NEWLY FALLEN
The Cynthia Winings Gallery presents The Newly Fallen, a collaboration with artist, Chris Doyle. Comprising four large scale artworks arranged in the woods, The Newly Fallen represents a memorial to those who have passed from the coronavirus. Each black and white watercolor drawing depicts the root system of a fallen tree, intricately depicted with hours of careful observation by Chris Doyle. Doyle writes, “Every year the forest loses some elders to the wind. This year, it seems like more than the usual number of trees have been uprooted. During this unprecedented period of mourning for those lost in the time of Covid-19, I found myself surveying the forest and marveling at the new life springing from earlier fallen trees. These drawings of exposed root systems are a kind of memorial to those people who, now fallen, continue on as sources of inspiration during this season of loss.”
