David Hornung

Artist Statement

.Hornung writes, β€œThe work included in this exhibition reflects the two parallel streams of my studio practice- oil painting and mixed media work that combines drawing with painted paper collage. I think of them as separate activities, painting being "plastic" and collage, constructed.

I never make them in tandem but instead take occasional breaks from painting to devote time to collage. My approach to both is improvisational, an extemporaneous process that usually involves getting lost and then struggling to find my way home. The visual connections are obvious, but I don't try to connect them. It's like comparing singing to playing a musical instrument. For me, painting is like singing.”

David Hornung is a painter and professor of art. He has taught painting, drawing, and color at many art schools and universities including Indiana University, Parsons, Pratt, Skidmore College, Brooklyn College, the Rhode Island School of Design and Adelphi University. He lives and paints in Woodstock, New York.
